International Star Jackie Chan Named Chengdu Panda Ambassador

—Jackie Chan donated 1 million YUAN when he adopted two panda cubs; Cheng Cheng and Long Long


On May 12 2009 a grand ceremony was held at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to appoint Jackie Chan, an international renowned action film star, TV actor and singer, as a Chengdu Panda Ambassador when as he adopted two giant pandas; Cheng Cheng and Long Long.

During the ceremony after Jackie Chan signed the agreement to adopt the giant pandas he surprised everyone by substantially increasing his donation. As he was about to hand his signed donation check to the director of the Chengdu Panda Base Mr. Zhang Zhihe, he took a pen from his pocket, and on the check wrote a zero before the decimal point to increase the original amount from 100,000 to 1,000,000 yuan. He said "I am so happy to adopt Cheng Cheng and Long Long that I will continue to adopt more pandas in the future. His voice was instantly drowned out by the audience’s booming applause for his generous donation towards giant panda conservation. Mr. Zhang then handed Jackie Chan an adoption brass plate, a giant panda adoption certificate and two traditional Chinese paintings of giant pandas. Mr. Chan graciously received the gifts, and then detailed how he became a passionate about giant pandas. He said, "I was fascinated by the giant panda at the first sight of it when I was in Berlin 10 years ago. I had never seen such lovely animals that I spent all the afternoon that day in the zoo watching them. Since then, I would never miss a documentary film about pandas. I love pandas so much that I was excited to learn that I could come here to see them and I had been imaging the happy moment when I hold them in arms and stroke their heads on my way to Chengdu Panda Base."

After the ceremony, Chengdu International Culture Association and Chengdu Tourism Association officially appointed Jackie Chan as a Chengdu Giant Panda Ambassador because of his contributions towards the post-disaster reconstruction in Sichuan. He Huazhang, president of Chengdu International Culture Association, handed the certificate of Chengdu Giant Panda Ambassador to Mr. Chan. He also put on the Panda Ambassador-T-shirt that was specifically made for him. Mr. Chan said that in this new role he will create awareness regarding Sichuan, Chengdu and giant pandas. Jane Zhang a young singer from Chengdu and a friend of Jackie Chan sang “I Love This City” to express her love for her hometown.

Afterwards Mr. Chan went to the nursery room of the panda base to see his adopted son Cheng Cheng and daughterLong Long and take pictures with them.

Other guests present at the ceremony were; Liu Yuanyuan, a young singer and the lead singer of Nation (a song for celebrating the 60th anniversary of the People's Republic of China), Wang Pingjiu, the songwriter of Nation and Death Can Not Tear Us Apart, Jin Peida, a musician and the composer of Nation, Shu Nan, a musician and the composer of Death Can Not Tear Us Apart, and Yu Binghan, the producer of Welcome to Beijing.

Yao Ming and His Wife Have Their First Giant Panda Encouter


On January 11, 2012, Chengdu Giant Panda Ambassador Yao Ming, the former NBA star player, and his wife Ye Li visited the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to have their first experience interacting with pandas.

Karen Mok Visiting Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley as a Giant Panda Ambassador


The famous Charity Ambassador Karen Mok visited Chengdu Panda Base and Panda Valley to see the world's first female panda and her child settling in the Panda Valley,on the outskirts of Dujiangyan city, about 60 km (40 miles) from the city of Chengdu.. At the end of the event, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding duly appointed Karen Mok as Honorable Chengdu Giant Panda Ambassador.

Si Yi, a three-month old boy panda cub, laid in his crib and stared innocently at Karen Mok, unaware she had already met its mother “Si Yuan” several years earlier. After this event, Karen posted a photo of Si Yi on Tencent Weibo: “Look at this panda baby! Its name is Si Yi, I have already met its mother “Si Yuan” a few years ago. I wish Si Yi a happy and healthy life!”

At Panda Valley, along with other 16 selected Pambassadors, Karen watched Qi Zhen and her daughter, Zhen Zhen moved into Panda Valley officially. This is the first pair of mother-daugher pandas living in Panda Valley.Later, they planted bamboo together for those lovely pandas living in Panda Valley. Fei Lisong, Deputy Director of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding said the settlement of Qi Zhen and her daughter into the PandaValley was significant in development of the approach to release the captive pandas into the field.

Korean Film Star Song Hye Kyo Named Chengdu Giant Panda Ambassador of Chengdu Panda Base

Song flew to Chengdu to visit panda cubs at Chengdu Panda Base


At 2: 00pm June 4 2009 , Korean Film Star Song Hye Kyo arrived at Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to shoot a public Pubilic video and had her first real contact with panda cubs.

Song Hye Kyo briefly spoke with the director of the Panda Base Doctor Zhang Zhihe and Deputy Secretary Tan Hongming. Doctor Zhang said, “It’s a great honor to have Ms. Song, an international superstar, arrive at Chengdu after a long journey flying from Korea to serve as Giant Panda Ambassador of Chengdu Panda Base, which is not only a charity event but a valuable contribution to the sustainable development of Chengdu Giant Panda Conservation”. Ms. Song said she would make efforts to promote the Conservation of Giant Pandas among all circles of society.

Ms. Song went to the Sunshine Nursary of the panda base to see the panda cubs born after the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12th, 2008. When she saw those cute and innocent panda cubs, she was very excited and expressed her appreciation for the staff's achievements and contributions to breeding and raising giant pandas after the earthquake. Accompanied by Doctor Zhang Zhihe, Ms. Song fed and played with those adorable pandas that were walking, playing and resting leisurely at the playground of the panda base. Finally Deputy Secretary Tan Hongming showed Song Hye Kyo around the main facilities at the base, including panda cub enclosures and red panda enclosures.

After this event, the Channel Young Ok magazine will publish photographs of Song Hye Kyo interacting with giant pandas. On June 6th ,2013, a public video featuring Song Hye Kyo's visit to Chengdu Panda Base will be shown at the “Channel Young Celebration” of SMG Channel Young Media and broadcasted live by Shanghai Dragon TV and its Network Channel. Tan Hongming, Deputy Secretary of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, will attend the “Channel Young Celebration” and its press conference as a special guest to answer questions from Chinese and foreign journalists and hand the certificate for “Giant Panda Ambassador of Chengdu Panda Base” to Song Hye Kyo.

Following Jackie Chan, Song Hye Kyo is the second international film star that has visited the Chengdu Panda Base on the one-year anniversary of Wenchuan earthquake on May 12th, 2008. By serving as a Giant Panda Ambassador of Chengdu Panda Base and visiting the Chengdu giant pandas, she has set a good example for other Chinese and foreign celebrities, corporations and organizations to help support the development of Giant Panda Conservation and promote Chengdu as the home town of Giant Pandas worldwide.
