The 21th Annual Conference of the Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for Giant Pandas


On Nov. 8 -10, 2011, the “21th Annual Conference of the Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for Giant Pandas” was held in Changsha, Hunan Province. Hundreds of representatives from various departments and organizations attended the conference, such as international and domestic government administrations, associations, main breeding and research units of giant panda, nature reserves, and conservation international and colleges or universities. The leaders having been present at the conference include: Hu Zhongping, Vice President and Secretary-general of Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens; Jia Jiansheng, Deputy Director-general of Department of Wild Lie Conservation of SFA; Xie Zhong, Deputy Secretary-general of Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens; Zhan Shanning, Director-general of Giant Panda Conservation Office of SFA; Wu Jianbo, Vice President of Forestry Department of Hunan Province; Zhong Changgui, Secretary of Changsha Forestry and Gardens Administration, etc.

According to the agenda, Doctor Zhang, the director of Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for Giant Panda made annual report first on reviewing the works in 2011, including breeding, research, international cooperation, conservation education, construction of facilities for global captive giant pandas. The report also summarized the research works on giant panda conservation over the past year, analyzed the common major and new issues of global giant panda conservation units, such as quality improvement and safety of captive giant panda population, and research on reintroduction. Regarding these issues and plans, he put forward the focus of the committee in 2012.

During the academic exchange, on the basis of international and domestic cooperation and research program and scientific research in 2011, the representatives discussed extensively on the progress of international cooperation in the research of giant pandas, reproduction, genetics, ethology, theriatrics, ecology and public education. 27 experts of related field made academic report respectively, including those from US, Japan, Austria, Australia, Thailand, Taipei Zoo, Hong Kong Ocean Park, IACM, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda in Wolong, Shaanxi Wild Animal Rescue and Research Center, Beijing Zoo, Shanghai Zoo, Chongqing Zoo, Taipei Zoo, Fuzhou Giant Panda World Zoo, as well as Beijing Normal University, China West Normal University, Sichuan Agricultural University.

As for the special topic, the objective of population management technology – ex-situ conservation project of giant panda was reviewed and discussed in the conference.

After a succession of annual report, international cooperation report, research report and seminar, the conference was completed successfully. The representatives agreed that, the conference not only had the latest technical results of giant panda conservation exchanged, but also was beneficial to the overall development of strength in giant panda conservation; meanwhile, they also reached an agreement on future trend, focus and common issues of giant panda conservation, which may play an important role in pushing forward the long-term development of the flagship course of giant panda conservation on the aspect of policy management, technical development, cooperation mechanism and coordination actions, etc. The joint organizer, Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Changsha Ecological Zoo provided considerate logistic services through thoughtful arrangement, and was praised by all residents. It is hoped that the future annual conference of the Chinese Committee of Breeding Techniques for Giant Pandas will continue to play its significant role as an international research platform for international academic exchange and cooperation on giant panda conservation.
