2014-06-30

A celebration was held at the Chengdu Panda Base on June 23, 2014 to mark the “First Anniversary for the Return of Giant Panda Twins from Japan to China”. This event was sponsored by the Sichuan Tourism Bureau and co-sponsored by Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Center. Fifty delegates from the Japan-China Friendship Association, NHK, Life-long Education News Agency, “Consumption and Life” Magazine, Japan-China Association of Photographic Arts, Joint Stock Corporation Knowledge Economy Institute, Joint Stock Corporation Tokyo Group, Sichuan Tourism Bureau and Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Center attended the ceremony.

“Mei Hin” and “Ei Hin”, a pair of giant panda twins, were born in Adventure World, a wildlife park in the city of Shirahama in Japan’s Wakayama Prefecture on September 13, 2008. On February 26, 2013, they returned to their hometown, Chengdu, and started a new life at the Chengdu Giant Panda Breeding Research Center. They have been living in Chengdu for one year, and have attracted numerous tourists from at home and abroad, especially the “panda fans” from Japan.

During the ceremony, Japanese guests watched videos showing the happy life of “Mei Hin” and “Ei Hin” in China. Ms. Yumiko Kajiwara, the 2012 “Pambassador” from Japan, expressed her congratulations in her speech. Adventure World sent a telegraph from Japan to congratulate the panda twins on returning to their hometown. Yu Junzhi, a renowned painter from Japan and Chief Editor of “Ink and Wash Painting” Magazine, gave a picture scroll of giant pandas which he created to the sponsors. Officials of Sichuan Tourism Bureau also gave souvenirs with unique local features to Japanese guests. Finally, the Japanese guests accompanied by staff members of the Chengdu Panda Base, visited “Ei Hin”, the younger brother of the giant panda twins, and took pictures of him. All guests felt happy to see that the panda twins are growing healthily and happily in their hometown.

The giant panda twins are very popular with the Japanese people, and this event aimed to inform the Japanese about Sichuan province, a beautiful place with both natural and cultural charms. This event was held in conjunction with the 2014 Sichuan International Cultural Tourism Festival, in a bid to introduce Japanese guests from the tourism industry and mass media to experience the abundant tourist products and joyful festival atmosphere in Sichuan.
