Giant Pandas Xi Lan and A Bao Come Home after a Long Flight from the U.S. to Chengdu Proofreader: Charlene Johnson   Time: 2014-05-20

At approximately 02:00 today, Korean Air flight KE321 landed at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport.. Many individuals were anticipating the flight and its precious cargo. When the airplane taxied to the gate, staff from the panda base who had been waiting anxiously at the airport could not help feeling excited. The giant panda siblings, brother Xi Lan and sister A Bao, took this flight to return to the hometown of their dreams—Chengdu. After traveling from the U.S. they will settle at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and start their happy new life!

According to the schedule, Xi Lan and A Bao flew from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at 11:15 of May 12 China time. They changed plane in Incheon International Airport, and arrived at Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport at 02:00 on May 15, returning to their “native place”, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding on the same day.

When the Chengdu base staff transported them by forklift from the airport terminal to the awaiting special transfer vehicle, the vivacious siblings who set foot on land of their hometown for the first time were looking around curiously and frequently showing great interest in the amiable people and all things around them. Due to the long journey, the returnee siblings also looked a little tired.

At approximately 05:30 today, Xi Lan and A Bao reached Giant Panda Quarantine Room of the base as planned. The transfer went smoothly. They will stay here to receive quarantine and acclimate themselves to a new diet, climate and environment for one month, and then meet with visitors from at home and abroad. The base has assigned professional breeders to take good care of these two giant pandas, and prepared high-quality bamboo, bamboo shoots, steamed corn bread and other foods, to meet the demand of returnee giant pandas and make them eat home-grown food as soon as possible.

According to national policies on protecting giant pandas, International Trade Convention for Endangered Plants and Animals and relevant agreements signed by Chinese governments and international partners, the property right of offspring that Chinese giant pandas give birth to in other countries shall still belong to China, and these offspring will be sent back to China when they reach sexual maturity or the cooperation comes to an end.
