Light-hearted Mom. Giant Panda Dajiao Takes a Nap Before Delivery

Giant panda Dajiao successfully delivered a male cub, weighing 179g, at 3:55 a.m. on August 15, 2016 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Both the mother and baby are now in good shape.

Giant panda Dajiao, born on August 30, 2006, lives in the Moon Nursery of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Since Dajiao had given birth before, she remained quite calm this time. According to expert Wu Kongjun, Dajiao’s water broke at 2:16 a.m. on August 15, and she gave birth to her baby over one hour later. Unlike other panda moms who look fretful and restless before giving birth, Dajiao was calm and had even fallen asleep before delivery.

June, July and August of each year are the peak birthing months of giant pandas. The birthing season requires the breeders to take good care of the giant pandas day and night so that the giant pandas may give birth successfully. We are grateful to the breeders who have worked day and night to look after the giant pandas.
