Debut of 2017 Newborn Pandas Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Base

2017-10-18

In this beautiful autumn season and on the eve of the National Day Holiday as well as the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding debuted in spectacular fashion 11 panda cubs born in this year. In 2017, the Base successfully bred 11 surviving giant panda cubs in 8 litters, including 3 pairs of twins and one born overseas. As of now, the Base has a total of 184 pandas, making it the world’s largest ex-situ captive giant panda population.
At 9:30 am on September 29, they kicked off the debut with 11 primary school students representing the 11 newborn panda cubs born in this year in the Moonlight Delivery House. These pupils are representatives of Chengdu’s young environmental protection guards. Holding an information board in hand, they introduced these panda babies to passers-by on the visitor path outside of the playground of the Moonlight Delivery House. Then, the “panda daddies” and “panda mommies”, who are sought after in panda-themed stream videos, made their entrance into the playground with the beloved panda cubs in their arms. They stood in the shape of a mysterious figure: “30”. Unaware of such a grand debut, those care-free and vivacious pandas gathered together and horse-played with each other. Panda daddies and mommies were busy encouraging their children to behave themselves to no avail. Spectators were greatly amused by the atmosphere.
After the debut, a mysterious guest unveiled himself, Mr. Sun Nan, a renowned singer, who is committed to public welfare undertakings both in person and through his influence. Mr. Sun was announced as the “Music Ambassador for Pandas” by the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. With his new title, Mr. Sun cooperated with the Base through public services, calling for giant panda conservation and ecological protection.
When receiving his title, Mr. Sun Nan said he was particularly honored to be part of giant panda conservation. He promised to produce a song for the cause. The song would be distributed all over the world via multiple channels in the form of music videos or opening videos on his world-tour. He would like to, through this song, galvanize global efforts in giant panda conservation and ecological protection.
The figure “30” formed by those panda cubs during the debut represents a history of 30 years since the establishment of the Panda Base. Three decades ago, the Base only had 6 giant pandas, which were sick and starving when they were rescued from the wild. Thanks to technological progress and relentless efforts, the Base now has 184 giant pandas, making it the world’s largest artificial breeding ex-situ population.
The past 30 years also witnessed a host of “heroic” pandas. For instance, “Zhi Zhi” is one of the granddaughters of “Ya Ya” while Ya Ya’s birth coincided with the opening ceremony of the 1990 Beijing Asian Games. “Ya Ya”, as a hero mother, gave birth to 13 cubs across 9 litters with all but one surviving. In addition, “Ya Ya” is the eldest one of the world’s first pair of giant panda twins through artificial breeding.
Ya Ya has a twin brother “Xiang Xiang”. Their mother “Qing Qing” had a strong maternal instinct and was also very cooperative with the staff. As a result, the Base made the best use of it by combining maternal care and infant incubators, so that the twins could be breastfed in turn as well as remain under strict health monitoring. The excellent growth of the twins provided confidence for the new method for raising twins.
Twenty-seven years later, “Zhi Zhi”, one of Ya Ya’s granddaughters, the elder sister of the world’s first artificially bred giant panda twins-also gave birth to the twins of “Zhi Shi (Cheese)” and “Zhi Ma (sesame)” as a precious gift to the Base’s thirty years’ anniversary. Today, the absolute growth rate of the captive population in the Base reached 200% (2013-2016). Over 70 research results have been reached and more than 400 papers published by the Base on endangered wildlife conservation and wilderness first-aid for giant pandas, red pandas, South China tigers, snub-nosed monkeys, and others. At the same time, the Base has collaborated with a total of 13 countries and regions including the United States, Japan, Spain, and Germany to carry out international scientific research and cultural exchanges on giant pandas, making it a worldwide benchmark for endangered animal protection. The Panda Base has now been named a “Global 500” by the United Nations Environmental Protection Agency, a “National AAAA-level Scenic Spot”, “Top 20 of the Most Internationally Influential Chinese Scenic Spots”, and other titles. The Base has become the best tourist destination for both citizens and our country’s guests to gain firsthand experience with giant pandas in China.
