The Lightest Giant Panda Born Ever Grows from “Thumbelina” to “Palmelina” in 1 Month

At 18:08 on June 11, 2019, the giant panda Cheng Da, residing at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, gave birth to a cub named Cheng Lang that weighed only 42.8g, as well as her older sister Cheng Feng, both carrying the good wishes that they will be lucky enough to live long, healthy lives (thanks in no small part to the staff at the Base). On July 11, Cheng Lang turned 1 month old. Thanks to the tender care of the doting Cheng Da and nursing associates, all physical indicators regarding Cheng Lang have now become optimal, and she can finally suckle milk from her mother all on her own. “Thumbelina”, who everyone was concerned about, is now of the size of an average human palm.

After the birth of “Cheng Lang”, The Chengdu Panda Base appointed the most experienced team in the nursing field care for the cub around the clock. Growing from 42.8g at birth to 600g at present, Cheng Lang, who was 2/3 the size of her sister at birth, is now quickly narrowing the gap between her and her sister in terms of size.

Wu Kongju, an expert at the Chengdu Panda Base, said, “Every member in our team has given it their all helping Cheng Lang nurse”. Initially, Cheng Lang was unable to suckle milk from her mother, so the breeders had to pump the milk from her mother and bottle feed the cub. To their surprise, Cheng Lang showed a strong desire for milk. She vigorously suckled the bottle’s nipple without stopping so much that she couldn’t swallow all the milk in her mouth, and the milk began to foam, emerging from her nose. Once this new issue appeared, experts immediately sprang into action, replacing it with a smaller nipple and constantly adjusted the tiny panda’s feeding position to ensure that Cheng Lang could be sated safely because a danger was always present that milk may accidentally enter into Cheng Lang’s lungs. The expert team at the Chengdu Panda Base took care of the cub day and night. Cheng Lang has grown day by day, and thanks to the patient guidance of this expert team at the Chengdu Panda Base, she can finally suckle milk from her mother all on her own with an intake between 100g and 120g.
