The 2019 China (Sichuan) International Giant Panda Eco-tourism Festival was recently launched in Chengdu. At the opening ceremony, Qumu Shiha - a Standing Committee member of the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and secretary of the Working Committee for Organizations Directly under Sichuan Province, and Yao Sidan - vice governor of the People's Government of Sichuan Province officially unveiled the Sichuan Academy of Giant Panda. Dr. Zhang Zhihe, secretary and director of Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, serves as the president of the academy.

The main responsibilities of the Sichuan Academy of Giant Pandas are as follows: carry out basic scientific research related to wild giant panda population genetic archives, genetic gene bank, rejuvenation of small populations, and habitat protection and restoration technology; carry out research on breeding, wild training and release, and disease prevention and control of giant pandas in captivity; make use of the existing scientific research institutions to establish a cooperation model of one academy with multiple bases to deepen the scientific research achievements on giant pandas; collaborate with well-known universities and research institutes at home and abroad to carry out scientific research in key areas such as national park scientific research planning, ecological environment protection, biodiversity protection, and the construction of effectiveness evaluation and monitoring system. The Sichuan Academy of Giant Pandas will conduct research on key projects in the frontier scientific field of giant pandas, and carry out long-term cooperation and exchanges with world-renowned research institutions and international organizations, so as to lead China's giant panda protection cause always in the forefront of the world with the high level scientific research achievements.
