He has many titles including the director-general of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, the director-general of the Giant Panda Breeding Technology Committee of China, the vice director-general and secretary of the Chengdu Research Foundation of Giant Panda Breeding, the executive director of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens, member of the consultation panel for conservation and management of giant panda subordinated to the State Forestry Administration of the PRC, the vice director-general of the Sichuan Zoological Society, member of the Sichuan Youth Federation and China Youth Federation, and representative of the 9th CPC Congress of Sichuan. Also, he has been granted many awards such as “Distinguished Expert of Chengdu,” “Top 10 Outstanding Youth of Chengdu” and “Nominee of 2005 Top 10 Outstanding Youth of China” as well as special subsidies issued by the State Council. He has devoted himself for many years to the conservation and management of endangered wildlife such as giant pandas, red pandas and leopards. He has participated in and witnessed the success of major national research projects—Research in Reproduction and Conservation Genetics of the Giant Panda, the National 863 Project—Giant Panda Gene Bank, National Science & Technology Platform—Chinese Endangered Wildlife Gene Bank and Sichuan Science & Technology Platform, and more than 30 projects jointly developed by the Sichuan Outstanding Youth Science & Technology Foundation and international partners. During these years, Mr. Zhang has won many prizes (1 prize of national science & technology achievement, 5 prizes of provincial and ministerial science & technology achievement, 10 prizes of municipal science & technology achievement), and compiled two works as chief editor and published 42 articles.

Aged 62, doctor tutor. He is the vice president of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and the director-general of the Chengdu Research Foundation of Giant Panda Breeding. He has published more than 30 academic articles and complied independently or co-compiled 5 works including Reproduction, Physiology and Artificial Breeding of Giant Pandas and Research in Giant Panda Breeding and Disease and achieved 16 inspiring research accomplishments. A number of these accomplishments are at a world leading level among similar fields, such as artificial breeding of giant pandas with frozen semen, successful hand-rearing of newborn giant panda twins, methodology for control of hemorrhagic enteritis in giant panda, research & development of giant panda DNA fingerprinting probe, and methods for the extraction of whole-genome DNA from feces and fixed tissue. Also, he has won many prizes (1 second-prize and 1 third-prize of national science & technology advancement, 1 second-prize of national technology invention, 3 first-prizes, 1 second-prize and 5 third-prizes of provincial and ministerial science & technology advancement). In 1995, he was granted by the state the title of “National-level Distinguished Middle-aged Expert” and entitled to enjoy special subsidies issued by the State Council. |

Aged 61, titled veterinary research pioneer of Sichuan province. He has been engaged in the research, veterinary care and raising of rare and endangered wildlife including giant pandas. He was the former director-general of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. Currently, he is the executive director of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens and Sichuan Zoological Society. He has made outstanding performances in research, disease control and raising of wildlife. He has published more than 30 high-level articles including “Control of Hemorrhagic Enteritis in Giant Pandas,” “Research in Hand-rearing of Newborn Giant Panda Twins,” “Research in Genetic Diversity of Artificial Population of Red Pandas” to name a few. He is frequently invited to international academic forums and has been awarded many prizes for his articles. He has participated in over 10 studies in disease control, breeding and genetics of giant pandas, of which, most are at a world leading level, and 9 granted prizes of national, ministerial and provincial levels. He was once evaluated as a 95-99 Distinguished Expert of Chengdu. In 1994, he was selected as an Excellent Expert of Sichuan and entitled to enjoy special subsidies issued by the State Council. |

She is presently the director-general of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, and the vice executive director of the Sichuan Key Lab for Breeding and Conservation of Endangered Wildlife. As a principle researcher, she participated in 22 research projects funded by the national, provincial and municipal governments and Chengdu Research Foundation of Giant Panda Breeding, from which, 3 prizes of Sichuan Science & Technology Advancement and 5 prizes of Chengdu Science & Technology Advancement were awarded. She has tutored 12 postgraduates, published 36 articles (5 of which were evaluated as excellent articles) and co-authored 2 works. In 2004, she was entitled to enjoy special subsidies issued by the State Council. In 2005, she was selected as the candidate for distinguished young academic pioneer of Sichuan and received funding from the Sichuan Youth Science & Technology Foundation. Also, she has won many honored tiles such as Sichuan Model Worker, Chengdu Model Worker and Chengdu Youth Science & Technology Pioneer. |

Wang Chengdong: Researcher

Assistant to the director-general of the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, he is specialized in research in clinical and preventive veterinary medicine for giant pandas and red pandas. He has participated in the breeding of 50 giant pandas. As chief author, he has published 28 articles in both domestic and foreign journals. Moreover, he has won 2 prizes of Sichuan Science & Technology Advancement and 5 prizes of Chengdu Science & Technology Advancement. |

He is also the executive director of the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens, a member of the China Zoological Society, commissioner of the Giant Panda Breeding Technology Committee of China, commissioner of the Coordination Committee for South China Tiger Conservation, director-general of the Chengdu Research Foundation of Giant Panda Breeding, editor of the Sichuan Animal, VIP member of the Sichuan Provincial Association for Science & Technology, principle commissioner of the Chengdu technical-title qualification committee for engineering and technical conservation of wildlife, and expert of the Endangered Species Scientific Commission of China.
Since he devoted himself to ex situ conservation of wildlife, he has achieved many accomplishments in research in breeding of rare and endangered wildlife such as giant pandas. He is the principal researcher for over 20 research subjects and has won 13 prizes in these areas. He has authored and translated more than 70 articles, compiled 8 technical documents (such as technical reports, regulations and plans), totaling over 400,000 words (in Chinese characters).
In July 1995, he was named a Chengdu Youth Science & Technology Pioneer by CYLC (Communist Youth League of China) Chengdu Committee. In December 1996, he was named a Distinguished Expert of Sichuan by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province. In 2001, he was entitled to enjoy special subsidies issued by the State Council. In 2003, he was selected as acandidate for Research Pioneer of Sichuan. Moreover, he has frequently been named an outstanding worker in science & technology and excellent communist by the Chengdu Construction Commission and Chengdu Forestry & Garden Administration. |

She was employed in 2005 as the chief director of the Department of Conservation Education. Graduated from GeorgiaStateUniversity, she obtained for a Ph.D. in early-childhood education focusing on conservation science, a master of education in science education also from GeorgiaState, and a master of arts in physical anthropology from NorthernIllinoisUniversity. in. She is a member of the Commission on Education and Communication of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), a member of the Task Force on Cities and Protected Areas of the IUCN, board member of GLOBIO, the education advisor to the Giant Panda Species Survival Plan, the education advisor to the Chelonian Taxon Advisory Group, , the Society for Human Ecology, the Society for Conservation Biology, the International Society for Anthrozoology, the International Zoo Educators Association, the North American Association for Environmental Education, and the Turtle Survival Alliance.
Sarah M. Bexell has been engaged in animal conservation and environmental education for many years, and began to devote herself to these areas in China beginning in 1999. Thanks to her help and efforts, the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Chengdu Zoo established their own conservation and education departments. Also, she has participated in many projects related to conservation and education. She trained a number of full-time workers for conservation and education. She edited a 5-day camp book for Chinese students. With her suggestions, a series of conservation and educational activities are offered at the Base, such as family package tours, 1-day off-campus tour, young zoologist, volunteer service program, and the international internship program. |
