Research Team

001.jpgSo far, the laboratory has built a research team composed of Ph.D and MD holders in disciplines such as; genetics, animal genetics, breeding and reproduction, veterinary medicine, and ecology.  It has employed 46 associate senior and senior researchers and 30 associate researchers that are national experts or top professionals at both provincial and city levels, including 12 professors (1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and 12 doctoral tutors), 7 associate professors and associate researchers, 27 associate senior researchers and 24 Ph.D holders.

In recent years, the Chengdu Panda Base has increased efforts to expand its qualified personnel by hiring a large number of scientists, facilitating and improving the education and training its, staff, and employing senior researchers around the globe. In 2003, the Chengdu Panda Base was honored as the “Advanced Unit of Talent Development of Sichuan Province” by the CPC Sichuan Provincial Committee and Sichuan Provincial Government, and approved as a “Post-doctoral Scientific Research Workstation” by the former Ministry of Personnel of the People’s Republic of China (Currently Ministry of Human Resources and Social Security of the People’s Republic of China).

Reproductive Biology for Endangered Wildlife

This research focuses on the natural growth and reproduction law of various species, and elements like their natural growth, oestrus, reproduction, food preferences. This research direction tackles key problems in the growth and development law, physiological property, nutritional requirement features, reproductive regulation mechanism, behavior rule, etc. of the Chinese endemic endangered wildlife. These species are represented by the giant panda, whose research emphasizes the bottleneck in artificial reproduction, protection and recovery of the natural breeding abilities of the endangered wildlife. Thereby this research improves the viability and reproductive capacity of endangered wildlife, and  establishes the standardized technical system of artificial breeding of endangered wildlife.

Conservation Genetics for Endangered Wildlife

By applying the theories and methods of the modern genomics, proteomics, and information biology, this research studies the screening, application and standardized methods of molecular markers, identification of wild caught, animal migration, dispersal and gene flow. As well standardized methods and applications of genetic pedigree, genetic management of species in captivity, genetic diversity and species endangering mechanism, so as to solve several problems related to the genetic management of endangered species in theory and practice.

Conservation Biology for Endangered Wildlife

By applying the satellite remote sensing technology (global positioning system or GPS) modern technologies such as the geographic information system (GIS) and system ecological approaches, this research conducts in-depth studies on the habitat selection, relocation diffusion, information exchange, and much more of endangered wildlife. This combination designs a comprehensive evaluation about habitat statuses, development tendencies and living conditions. It also establishes the GIS of endangered wildlife, establishes and improves the evaluation system for the conservation ability and level of the natural conservation area, studies the impacts of climate warning on endangered wildlife like the giant panda, and creates effective wildlife conservation strategies and plans.

Disease Prevention and Cure for Wildlife

Through the application of modern molecular biology, immunology and biomedicine technologies, this research studies the monitoring system and early warning mechanisms of wildlife disease, researches and improves the disease prevention system to prevent the spread of diseases between humans and wildlife. Also carries out technical research on the rescue and control of large-scale spread of wildlife diseases.
