Laboratory Overview

The laboratory was founded in 1997 and officially approved as the Key Laboratory for the Reproduction and Conservation Genetics of Endangered Wildlife of Sichuan Province in 2001. In 2007, relying on the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding and Sichuan University, the laboratory was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology as the Sichuan Key Laboratory of Conservation Biology for Endangered Wildlife –a state key laboratory breeding base co-founded by Sichuan Province and the Ministry of Science and Technology. Based on the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, it was approved as an “International Science & Technology Cooperation Base” at the state-level by the Ministry of Science and Technology in 2011. In 2021, it was approved as a National Forestry and Grassland Long-term Scientific Research Base. The laboratory focuses on four research directions: Conservation Thremmatology of Endangered Wildlife, Conservation Genetics of Endangered Wildlife, Disease Prevention and Control of Endangered Wildlife, and Conservation Ecology of Endangered Wildlife. A scientific research team led by doctors and masters has been established. As of 2022 by organizing and carrying out more than 400 scientific research projects for research and technological innovation, the Base has won more than 70 scientific research awards and honors at all levels, including 4 national scientific achievements, 27 provincial and ministerial scientific achievements, and 33 municipal scientific achievements. Moreover, it has published more than 400 papers in well-known international and domestic journals and obtained over 80 national patents, including over 40 invention patents. A new path for giant panda conservation has been successfully explored in this way. The application of these achievements has expanded the populations of giant pandas in Chengdu to 237 (by the end of 2022), and formed an international brand of giant panda scientific research and conservation, public education and cultural tourism, winning widespread attention and high praises from the international community.
